When Tobias plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot him at the front left of the stage with fellow violinists.
Tobias joined the TSO in early 2024 after several years in the US, playing in orchestras including the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Erie Philharmonic.
He has held associate/assistant concertmaster roles with Pennsylviania’s Johnstown Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Opera Festival in Massachusetts.
Tobias studied at the Australian National University School of Music and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and did his graduate studies at Duquesne University in the US.
Tobias has regularly featured as a guest artist at US festivals including the Sunflower Music Festival in Kansas and the Buzzards Bay Music Festival in Massachusetts.
He enjoys living in Tasmania because of its beauty, history, and character. ‘I like being able to walk somewhere that feels wild and beautiful and then go and live daily life whether that is rehearsals, practicing, a concert, or errands.’
Recent career highlights: our 2025 concert with Pekka Kuusisto and our Dark Mofo collaborations, as well as major concerts featuring Ravel, Strauss and Mahler.
‘I don't have a particular pre-concert routine but I do think it's important to just acknowledge and psychologically prepare for a performance. Performing is a different state from the everyday’.
