What to expect

You don’t just hear the music at our concerts: you feel it. The energy, the emotion and the thrill of a live orchestra stays with you long after the final note. We’ve been evoking these feelings and creating these experiences for more than 75 years — and we’re just getting started.

First concert?

We love welcoming new people to our concerts! Here we answer some common questions about what to expect.

You’re welcome to dress up to the nines, but we don’t expect you to. There’s no dress code. Jeans are as appropriate as tuxedos, and sneakers are as accepted as heels.

It can be confusing when some people don’t clap during pauses, no matter how thrilling the music.

Classical music pieces are often divided into sections called movements, and some audience members prefer to wait until the end of the entire piece of music before they applaud and cheer.

For the record, our musicians and conductors love it if you clap whenever there’s a pause, so please do whatever feels most natural.

The best way to enjoy a TSO concert is to be fully present, so please turn your phone off or switch it to silent and immerse yourself in the music.

Feel free to take a picture while the musicians are warming up or when they take their final bow.

Just remember to turn off the flash to avoid annoying those around you. And please tag us @tasmaniansymphonyorchestra and #TasmanianSymphonyOrchestra if you’re sharing your photos.

We recommend arriving 30 minutes before the concert and allowing time for any traffic or parking issues (and to take advantage of on-site bars).

If you’re running late, don’t panic. Our friendly staff will be there to usher you to your seat at the earliest appropriate moment.

We love seeing kids enjoying the TSO. We’ve even designed a range of Family Concerts that are tailor-made for youngsters and concerts with relaxed performances that are ideal for kids with sensory needs.

In our mainstage events, Federation Concert Hall Series concerts often finish between 9.30pm and 10pm and may not suit all youngsters.

Seating

Some people like to be right up the front where they can see the perspiration on musicians’ foreheads. Others enjoy being up the back, with an elevated view of the entire orchestra.

While all seats in the hall allow for a great concert experience, you can choose to pay extra for the most popular seats in the house. These tend to be closer to the stage while allowing great views of the orchestra and soloists (soloists almost always perform on the lefthand side of the stage as viewed from the audience).

For our concerts in Federation Concert Hall, you can choose where to sit by using the interactive map on the event booking page.

Click on ‘Purchase best available seating’, to select the most popular seats in your chosen price category, or use the interactive map to choose your seats.

Our friendly Box Office team is only a phone call or email away if you need help finding the best seats for you.
