TSO Chorus

Our Chorus

‘Music has a unique power to evoke an emotional response and singing is especially relevant because it relies solely on the human body – it’s you, your voice, and all your emotions.’

Warren Trevelyan-Jones, TSO Chorusmaster

About

The beloved, talented and remarkable TSO Chorus is one of Tasmania’s leading vocal ensembles.

Our chorus performs regularly with the orchestra in Federation Concert Hall, and in a capella performances around Tasmania. It has performed with other symphony orchestras around Australia and has toured internationally to Berlin, Barcelona, and the UK.

Tasmania.

The chorus is made up of over 70 choristers from Nipaluna / Hobart and broader Tasmania

In 2025, the chorus toured the UK and performed at the ANZAC Day service in Westminster Abbey

The chorus performs several concerts with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra each year

The TSO Chorus was formed in 1992, first for concert opera, then broadened to major choral works (like Beethoven and Puccini)

Join the chorus

Were you born to sing? Is your voice your instrument? Does music dance through your veins? If so, you might be perfect for the TSO Chorus.

Auditioning

The TSO Chorus is always looking for new members.

  • Auditions are held twice a year and include singing a classical solo piece, singing an excerpt from a major choral work, and aural and sight-reading tests
  • They usually take around 15 minutes
  • Previous choral experience and an ability to read music is desirable, but not essential
  • The TSO Chorus also offers a Student Program for choristers in Years 11 and 12.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals are held between 7:30 and 10pm every Tuesday evening in the TSO Studio, and most evenings in the week before a performance. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled as necessary.

The chorus performs with the TSO an average of 4-6 times a year and maintains its own schedule of chorus-only recitals and regional performances.

Projects vary in schedules and length, but an annual rehearsal schedule is made available at the end of year for the following year. Members are expected to commit to all projects and all rehearsals, where possible.

Learning tools are provided where available, but choristers are expected to learn the music at home and come to rehearsals prepared.
