When Rachel plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot her at the back right of the stage with fellow brass musicians.
‘The tuba is my vessel to sing – it provides the most incredible depth, warmth and power to the orchestra’s sound and can also play soaring melodies and be incredibly virtuosic.’
Rachel joined the TSO as Principal Tuba in 2024, having played with the Queensland, Melbourne and Adelaide symphony orchestras and Auckland Philharmonia.
She studied at the Queensland Conservatorium, where she was the winner of the 2020 Beta Sigma Phi Brass Prize and recipient of the Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship.
Rachel is an alumna of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and in 2022 was part of the inaugural MSO Academy.
Originally from Queensland, Rachel returns often to Brisbane where she plays in a piano, vocal and tuba ensemble called The Boxties.
She enjoys the TSO’s sense of community. ‘I love our adorable quirks as a group, such as our love of biscuits and baked goods, going all-out in our dress-up concerts and our affinity for hosting dinner parties’.
Dream Collab: ‘I’m a big fan of Laufey and her orchestra collaborations. I would love to work with her!’.
