When Mark plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot him at the back right of the stage with fellow brass musicians.
‘We’ve had some amazing collaborations. I love being involved in any musical partnerships that brings the audience to their feet and gives them an extraordinary experience.’
Mark first played casually with the TSO before winning a permanent position in 2011.
He has performed with the Adelaide, West Australian and Canberra symphony orchestras, the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra (Germany), Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (Belgium), and the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra in Doha.
Mark has toured with the TSO and other orchestras throughout Germany, China, Poland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy, and New Zealand.
He studied (and later taught) at the Australian National University School of Music in Canberra and later the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt, Germany.
Mark has also taught at the University of Tasmania and with the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Young Symphonists program.
Originally from Adelaide, he enjoys the ‘big country town’ atmosphere of Hobart. ‘It also helps that we’ve got an outstanding orchestra here, with access to some of the world’s best performers every week’.
Mark grew up in a musical family and started trumpet when he was eight.
His first music lessons were singing with his godmother whose dog would howl along, causing great amusement. ‘That sense of joy and playfulness is something I try to bring into my own teaching’.
Outside the TSO, Mark runs Performance Under Pressure, delivering workshops in schools and organisations about motivation, mindset, and managing nerves. ‘I love helping and guiding the next generation of musical superstars so they can achieve their absolute best.’
