When David plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot him at the back right of the stage with fellow brass musicians.

‘I love the camaraderie among my TSO colleagues, and the varied workload – no two weeks are the same. The lifestyle and natural beauty of Tasmania is so unique and impossible to emulate anywhere else.’

About David

David joined the TSO in 2013 and became Principal Trombone in 2021.

He studied at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and England’s Royal Northern College of Music.

While in the UK, David worked regularly with The Hallé, Orchestra of Opera North, BBC Symphony and Philharmonic orchestras, and was Principal Trombone of the Brighouse & Rastrick Band.

Once back home, David worked as a freelance and contract musician with the Melbourne, Queensland and West Australian symphony orchestras and lectured in trombone at the University of Western Australia, as well as the WA Academy of Performing Arts.

He now tutors in trombone at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music.

David served in the Australian Army for six years and spent his teens and early twenties as a farm hand on a 5000 acre cattle farm in central Queensland.

With fellow TSO low brass (trombone and tuba) musicians, he co-founded the Overland Ensemble, which performs across Tasmania.

Recent career highlight: Performing a Sequenza solo by Luciano Berio in a TSO collaboration with choreographer Graeme Murphy AO and Janet Vernon AM.

Dream collab: Metallica, Sting, Bear McCreary, Eric Whitacre and Thirsty Merc. ‘I’d also love to work again with The Cat Empire, Lior, Birds of Tokyo, Ben Folds, The Whitlams, The Wolfe Bros etc!’.

Pre-concert habits

Listening to metal on the way to the concert hall. ‘It brings my energy levels up and helps me to focus on the evening ahead’.
