When Julian plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot him in the middle left of the stage with fellow horn players, between the violinists and percussionists.
‘It is quite special to have and be part of a full-time professional orchestra in a small city like Hobart – that's something that's quite common in northern Europe but doesn’t exist elsewhere in Australia.’
Julian joined the TSO in early 2023, having established his career in Finland where he was associate principal horn in Pori Sinfonietta and performed with many orchestras throughout the country.
During his time in Finland, Julian worked throughout the country with many ensembles, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Tampere Philharmonic, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonia Lahti, Pietarsaari Sinfonietta, and Kuopio Symphony Orchestra.
Since returning to Australia in 2016, he has performed as principal and section horn with the Opera Australia Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Auckland Philharmonia and the West Australian, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Darwin and New Zealand symphony orchestras.
Originally from Orange in NSW, Julian began learning the horn when he was nine and later studied at the University of Melbourne before completing a master's degree at the Sibelius Academy in Finland.
Previously, Julian spent 20 years studying the Japanese martial art of aikido, achieving the rank of nidan (second black belt).
In Finland, he developed an appreciation of sauna and cold water swimming – something he continues to enjoy in Tasmania, albeit not quite as cold!
Julian completed a permaculture design course in 2014 and helped establish and run a community garden in Perth, WA.
