‘Switching to bass trombone in high school was the best decision I ever made. I felt a connection to its sound and role in the orchestra that made me feel at home.’

About James

James played casually with the TSO before being appointed Principal Bass Trombone 2025.

Originally from Melbourne, James studied at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and Monash University.

He started playing the trombone in primary school and took up the bass trombone several years later. ‘I found my voice on the bass trombone and I love its versatility across many different styles of music.’

Recent career highlight: Haydn’s The Creation. ‘It has a prominent bass trombone part, and I’ve played an excerpt in every audition I’ve taken, so finally getting to perform this oratorio in its entirety with the TSO and Eivind Aadland in 2025 was special’.

Did you know?

James has a keen interest in contemporary classical music and improvisation. In his final year at ANAM, he was the recipient of the Gwen Nisbet Music Scholarship, which he used to pursue these interests and commission new Australian works.

Mid-week ritual: a pilgrimage to his local Hobart brewery with fellow TSO musicians. ‘Pizzas and great beer with great friends is a truly spiritual experience’.

Pre-concert habits

A nap and good hydration are essential. ‘In the lead up to a big performance I like to visit the float spa for some time in a sensory deprivation tank. It’s incredibly relaxing and I often leave feeling more creative and inspired afterwards’.

Interests

  • Playing board games. ‘My partner and I have 70-something games – most of them are hers, but we’re both obsessed.’
  • Running with the TSO run club. ‘I’m a proud TSO Turbo Chook’.
