When Lloyd plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot him in the middle of the stage with fellow woodwind musicians.
‘To use a sporting analogy, the piccoloist is an impact player, coming on in the frantic moments. I really enjoy that.’
Lloyd was the youngest member of the TSO when he first joined as a casual musician in the late '90s.
He has held the role of Principal Piccolo and Tutti Flute since 2001.
Lloyd has worked extensively with other orchestras, including the Sydney, Queensland and Adelaide symphony orchestras, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria.
In 2012, he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study piccolo performance and teaching in the US, Europe and Asia.
Lloyd spent part of 2016 working as Principal Piccolo with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
He lectured in flute performance for many years at the University of Tasmania.
Lloyd likes to say he began exploring a career playing piccolo ‘in order to converse with his beloved family dog’ – which is a good indication of his sense of humour.
Strong likes: Good food, good wine and good people.
Strong dislikes: Cooked peas. ‘Even the thought of eating one just about makes me projectile vomit’.
During rehearsal breaks, listening to music while swimming laps at the nearby aquatic centre. 'Lately I've been listening to Nine Inch Nails. An orchestral version of The Downward Spiral would be spectacular’.
