When Dinah plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot her in the middle of the stage with fellow woodwind musicians.
‘Having two roles in the orchestra is a really good balance for me – I get to do a bit of both.’
Since joining the TSO in 2001, Dinah has performed regularly as a soloist in her capacity as Principal Cor Anglais.
Her 2025 solo in Sibelius’ The Swan of Tuonela was described as ‘suberb’ and ‘outstanding’ by Limelight magazine.
Dinah grew up in central Victoria, travelling to Bendigo for music lessons each week as a youngster and later studying oboe at the Victorian College of the Arts.
She freelanced in Melbourne before moving to Hobart with the TSO.
Dinah has appeared as a soloist in many TSO concerts broadcast by ABC Classic, including the world premiere of Chris Williams’ cor anglais concerto, which was written especially for her.
Like many woodwind musicians, Dinah makes her own reeds. She has an ever-growing collection of specialist hand tools for splitting and shaping the cane. ‘When I said to my mum I want to learn the oboe, she said “That's a lovely sounding instrument, but you're going to spend the rest of your life worrying about reeds”. And she was absolutely right!’.
