When Doug plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot him at the middle right of the stage with fellow viola musicians.

‘I’ve always found it takes about a year to get to know an instrument … to know how far you can push it and its strengths and flaws.’

About Douglas

Doug was born in Melbourne and grew up in a musical family, playing the viola throughout primary and high school.

He studied at the Victorian College of the Arts and Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), playing in orchestral, chamber, and solo settings.

In 2012, Doug moved to Hobart and started working casually with the TSO and performing with various chamber music groups around the state.

He became a permanent TSO musician in 2016.

TSO career highlight: Performing the solo viola part in Mozart’s Symphonia Concertante alongside TSO Concertmaster Emma McGrath.

Doug is also a talented maker of violins and violas, travelling regularly to northern Italy to source wood for his instruments. Each instrument takes about three months to make.

Formative early music experience: While at the ANAM, Doug travelled to Hobart for a concert with the TSO. 'That was a life changing week and helped guide me into a job with the orchestra'.
