An update from the TSO education team

19 August 2024.

You may have seen the exciting news that the TSO is in the running for a major national award for our school education program.

We're one of four national finalists for the APRA AMCOS award for Excellence in Music Education. The 2025 Australian Art Music Awards ceremony will take place on Thursday 21 August at the City Recital Hall in Sydney.

We're so grateful for all the support from Tasmanian schools in 2025 for our workshops and concerts across the state.

Keep your eyes peeled in early September as we launch our 2026 education program. Next year is looking to be even bigger, with many opportunities for schools around the state to engage with their orchestra!

Read on below for an update from our latest schools visits.

In late July, Learning and Community Projects Manager Jack Machin was joined by trumpet player Fletcher Cox and trombonist James Littlewood for a week of Science and Sound performances in Hobart and surrounding areas.

They performed to excited audiences at Howrah Primary School, Glen Huon Primary School, St Mary’s College, St John’s Catholic Primary School in Richmond and Kempton Primary School.

One of the performances at St John’s had to be cut short due to a fire evacuation, but Fletch and James weren’t going to let this stop them from 'entertaining the troops' and they played a selection of short duets for the whole school as they waited for clearance to get back to classes.

No doubt the teachers were happy to have had this welcome distraction for the kids as they waited for fire services to arrive from Sorell.

The TSO has performed for more than 8000 students in 2025 so far and we are looking forward to smashing the 12,000 student goal by the year’s end.
