When Jonathan plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot him at the front centre-right of the stage with fellow cellists.

‘The Live Sessions concept is about creating a community feel and an exciting vibe. It’s great to travel to new places across Tassie and present a program that’s completely different to what we normally do.’

About Jonathan

Jonathan is one of Australia’s leading cellists and has been our Principal Cello since 2021, having first joined the TSO in 2018. He is the curator of Live Sessions, our series of laid-back concerts in venues across Tasmania.

Originally from Sydney, he studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM).

As well as the TSO, he performs regularly with ensembles including the Australian World Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Southern Cross Soloists

Jonathan teaches cello and has tutored for Musica Viva, Australian Youth Orchestra and National Music Camp. He is heavily involved with the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra.

Did you know?

Jonathan began learning piano at age five and switched to cello at 10. ‘I gave up piano as soon as I had to practice scales – as you do’.

Outside of work, he is kept busy by his two young kids and his mania for sports.
