When Ivan plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot him at the front centre-right of the stage with fellow cellists.
‘What a beautiful place to live this is – the lifestyle and environment and the fact that I’m surrounded by musicians who put their heart and soul into what they do.’
Ivan joined the TSO in 1983 and has enjoyed being part of the orchestra’s extensive recording projects and interstate and overseas tours.
He has been part of many collaborations and chamber ensembles, including the Tasmanian Symphony Chamber Players and the Tasman String Quartet.
Before moving to Tasmania, Ivan worked as a freelance cellist, including with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.
In 1982 he was the national winner of the string section of the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition.
Career highlights: TSO tours to China, Argentina, Canada, the US, Japan, Korea and Indonesia.
As well as an award-winning cellist, Ivan is a maker of violins. ‘I’ve always liked working with my hands and my aim is to make violins of the highest quality.’
His love of nature has led to extensive bushwalking and knowledge of the flora and fauna of Tasmania.
