Live Sessions returns for 2025

After last year’s sell-out concert in Westbury, our woodwind section is on the road again, bringing the laid-back Live Sessions vibes to New Norfolk and Ulverstone.

The winds will be joined by some brass and percussion friends to perform bangers from the 80s – not just the 1980s, but the 1780s and 1880s too. Think Billy Joel and The Beatles alongside Mendelssohn and Beethoven, with a side of Frank Zappa.

Our Principal Cello Jonathan Békés is the curator of these quirky, eclectic gigs and will keep audiences entertained between songs as the MC on the night.

‘It’s a wonderful community and family atmosphere and we’re really excited to be coming back to New Norfolk and also playing somewhere new, with The Pier in Ulverstone,’ Jono says.

‘The TSO is really committed to presenting our music to as many people across the state as we can, so it’s wonderful to be performing in these great venues.’

Derwent Valley Mayor Michelle Dracoulis welcomed the TSO returning to the valley on Wednesday 7 May with such an accessible concert format.

‘Many Derwent Valley locals love the thrill and connectivity of live performance, so having a Live Sessions of this calibre tour our regional town is sure to be well-received and deeply appreciated,’ she says.

On Friday 9 May the TSO crew will play at Ulverstone’s The Pier, a vibrant and relaxed pub on the River Leven from 7:30pm.

Dinner will be available at The Pier on the night, but bookings are essential.

The New Norfolk Live Sessions is once again being held at the War Memorial Hall and there will be local support acts and food trucks.

'Something for absolutely everyone'

‘The whole design of the Live Sessions concept is about creating a community feel and an exciting vibe. It’s great for us to go to different places and explore the local talent and present a really diverse and exciting program that’s completely different to what we’d normally do,’ says Jono.

‘We’ll have some really amazing classical repertoire, some quirky folk songs and some gorgeously relatable 1980s synth as well. There’s something for absolutely everyone.’
