When Gary plays with the full orchestra you can usually spot him at the back of the stage behind the horn players.
‘The constant variety in programs, working with different conductors, soloists and venues – and sharing these experiences with my colleagues is a thrill and a privilege.’
Gary joined the TSO in the role of Principal Percussion in 1987 and has enjoyed overseas tours with the orchestra including to the US and South America.
He completed degrees in percussion and composition in his home country of New Zealand before travelling to London and Amsterdam for further music studies.
When he moved to Australia in 1986, Gary was initially based in Brisbane where he taught percussion at the Queensland Conservatorium and acted as Principal Percussion with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
In Tasmania, Gary has continued studying, earning Associate in Music, Australia (AMusA) diplomas in both piano and bassoon.
He lectures in percussion and conducting at the University of Tasmania.
Gary is also an accomplished conductor and leads many of the TSO’s family concerts.
He regularly hosts conducting workshops that we run for school teachers and ensemble leaders in Tasmania.
Recent career highlights: Ravel’s Bolero in the TSO’s Season 2025. ‘I enjoy the challenge of new music programs, which usually have busy and often complicated percussion parts’.
