Strauss Horn Concerto

It’s hard to play favourites among Mozart’s piano concertos but, when pressed for an answer, most people opt for the Piano Concerto No 21 in C, which sometimes goes by the epithet ‘Elvira Madigan’. Australian pianist and world star Jayson Gillham returns to nipaluna/Hobart as soloist in this perennially popular work.

In the concert’s second half, the orchestra is reconfigured to bring the percussion section – normally tucked away up the back – closer to the front for Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, described by Eivind Aadland, conductor of this concert, as ‘one of the iconic masterworks of the 20th century and a personal favourite of mine’.
