The TSO Chorus was established in 1992 to present performances of opera in concert, the first of which was Verdi's La Traviata, followed by Puccini's La Boheme. In 1996 male members of the chorus joined the Australian Opera and TSO in a touring production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola, playing to audiences in Hobart, regional Victoria and southern New South Wales.
Since then, the TSO Chorus has performed a range of works from the major choral repertoire, including the Requiems by Mozart, Brahms and Faure, Vivaldi's Gloria, Haydn's The Creation and Nelson Mass, the Magnificat by Finzi, and Rejoice in the Lamb by Britten.
2006 saw the Chorus performing away from the Federation Concert Hall. Beethoven's 9th Symphony was presented at the historic Port Arthur site, and the Chorus entertained audiences at the Silverdome in Launceston and the Derwent Entertainment Centre in Hobart with performances of Scotland the Brave. A small group of TSO choristers performed Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms and Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe at the Sydney Opera House with the Sydney Philharmonia.
The choral program for 2007 commenced with Mighty Voices, a concert featuring the TSO Chorus with a program of cherished choral works including the Easter Hymn from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, and Lotti’s Crucifixus. The TSO Chorus also performed and recorded Mendelssohn’s Symphony No 2, Lobgesang, with the TSO Orchestra. In September, the Ladies of the Chorus performed Holst’s The Planets and the year culminated with Handel’s Messiah in St David’s Cathedral.
2008 promises to be another treat for lovers of choral music with the Chorus to perform Haydn’s Creation with Sara McLiver, Brahm’s Song of Destiny , Celestial featuring works by Bach, Handel, Faure, Bernstein and the Martin Mass for double choir.
Since its formation the TSO Chorus has been directed by esteemed Chorus Masters including Neil McEwan, Kynan Johns, John Haddock, and Tasmanians Sharon Prero, Paul Oxley, and since 2001, June Tyzack who has been assisted by repetiteur Stephanie Abercromby.
