Paul Stanhope was born in 1969 in Wollongong, NSW.

Paul was awarded a prestigious scholarship which enabled him to study at the Guildhall School of Music in London, UK in 2000. After this, his international career took off and in 2004 Paul was the winner of the international ‘Toru Takemitsu Composition Award’ for his work Fantasia on a theme of Vaughan Williams.

Paul has been awarded numerous prizes and fellowships in Australia as well, including the 2018 APRA/Australian Music Centre award ‘Orchestral Work of the Year’ for his Trombone Concerto.

Paul lives in Sydney and teaches composition at the Sydney University, Conservatorium of Music, where he is an Associate Professor and the Artistic Director of choral programs. He has been the Artistic Chair of the Australia Ensemble at the University of NSW since 2014.
