Schools tour: More words and music

3 June 2025.
The TSO has been busy in early 2025, performing a series of More Words and Music concerts in schools across Southern Tasmania.

Presented by our Learning and Community Projects Manager, Jack Machin, who is an experienced music educator and conductor, these concerts featured a 14-piece orchestra.

Students were introduced to the sounds of the orchestra and shown how music can both affect and reflect our emotions.

Our young audience members - from kinder to early high school - discovered more about how music and words can work together to tell stories and to evoke different feelings – even colours!

The students were even invited to change the way our musicians performed pieces manipulating how the various pieces sounded.

'To say that this was a week of pure joy, laughs and incredible links to the Australian Music and Literacy curriculums would be an understatement!' says Jack.

Over four days and 10 performances, Jack and our musicians performed for 2600 students across Hobart.

'A huge thanks must be extended to our host schools for the week; St Virgil’s College, St Mary’s College, Brighton High School and the Tarramah School and their fabulous supporting staff, Michael, Gabi, Wes and Gina,' Jack says.

'Thank you to all the schoolteachers who sent emails of praise. This is always such a thrill for our musicians to read and learn about the impact that these experiences have.'

The feedback from teachers, parents and students made the events incredibly worthwhile.

One teacher wrote: 'It was so wonderful to see [the children] listening to the orchestra in rapt attention. They loved Jack who was the conductor and lot of them mentioned they loved the percussionist and the trumpet player who played a very popular song haha! I have students with high needs who find it difficult to sit for a long time, but my class students were absolutely enthralled by the performance and loved it.'
