A letter from our CEO Caroline Sharpen

2 July 2025.

We are writing to all state election candidates asking you to pledge your support for legislated protection of the TSO during and after construction of the Macquarie Point stadium.

We’re on the record as strong supporters of Tasmania’s AFL and AFLW team.

Just like the Devils, we need elite infrastructure to do our state proud. The TSO’s concert hall is not just a live music venue, it’s an international digital recording facility.

We’re Australia’s most broadcast, streamed and recorded orchestra, with millions of viewers globally.

The planned multi-purpose stadium at Macquarie Point is just 170 metres from our Federation Concert Hall and our purpose-built recording and broadcast facilities.

When the enabling legislation for the Stadium at Macquarie Point arrives in Parliament, Tasmania’s orchestra needs you to play your part.

We are asking all parties and candidates to ensure that:

  • The permit conditions honour the Liberal Government’s commitment of $4.45 million towards noise mitigations for Federation Concert Hall and the TSO Orchestra Centre at 1 Davey Street.

  • The permit conditions provide robust management and legislative controls to ensure continued operations of the TSO during construction and operation of the Stadium.

Without your support of these measures, your orchestra’s future is left to chance.

More detail on the measures that will safeguard the future of the TSO can be found here in the TSO’s submission to the Tasmanian Planning Commission.

TSO concerts are streamed live and available for delayed viewing. They are shown around Australia via ABC iView and internationally via Symphony.live.

Multiple cameras give our online viewers more than 300 viewpoints of the orchestra, conductor and soloists.

We cannot leave this to chance – the TSO needs legislated protection.

We appreciate that the Minister for Business, Industry and Resources Eric Abetz listened to our concerns and committed the government to implement a range of engineering, legislative and management measures.

This includes committing government project funding of $4.45 million for engineering measures and flow-on costs.

We are now seeking written support from all candidates for all protection measures outlined above to be legislated as part of the stadium approval process

Learn more about the TSO’s intensive activities at 1 Davey St, Hobart in this behind-the-scenes video.

The nature of the orchestra’s work means that activities like concerts, recordings and education and training require long-term future planning.

We cannot leave this to chance – the TSO needs legislated protection.
