TAN DUN Double Bass Concerto, ‘Wolf Totem’
GRIEG Symphonic Dances, Op 64
Thursday 16 March
6pm
Federation Concert Hall, nipaluna/Hobart
Tan Dun’s vivid and vibrant music is equally at home in the cinema and the concert hall. Stuart Thomson, TSO Principal Double Bass, reprises his star turn as soloist in ‘Wolf Totem’, Tan Dun’s Double Bass Concerto, which Stuart has performed to acclaim both here and in China (the latter performance conducted by Tan Dun himself). It evokes the wide-open grasslands of Mongolia and the native wolf – held to be sacred – that ranges there. The concert opens with Jammed, a new work by Holly Harrison, and closes with Grieg’s folk-inspired Symphonic Dances.
