Fauré’s Requiem is performed as a live soundtrack to Sky Burial, a film by acclaimed British visual artist Mat Collishaw. Strange and dream-like, Sky Burial offers glimpses of the final moments of elderly residents in a decaying apartment block in the sky. Surrounded by loved ones, the terminally ill depart this life comforted by images – are they dreams? fantasies? recollections? – of idyllic outdoor scenes. Soon, the dead themselves are consigned to the outdoors in a ritual referencing the Tibetan Buddhist practice of ‘burying’ the deceased in the open air. Beautiful – but confronting in places – Sky Burial invites us to ponder mortality, mourning, nature and spirituality. All to the consoling strains of Fauré’s music.
