RELAXED CONCERTS
At the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra we believe that music is for everyone – including young listeners who might have trouble sitting still, paying attention, or trying new things.
That’s why we’ve designed our Relaxed Concerts.
Informal and fun, Relaxed Concerts offer you and your children 50 minutes of music in a casual setting with conductor Gary Wain, presenter Gina Rose and 15 musicians of the TSO. You get to hear great tunes, familiar favourites and maybe even get to conduct the orchestra!
Our Relaxed Concerts are for children aged from 5 to 10 years and are presented in the safe environment of the TSO Studio. (bring a cushion!)
TSO has partnered with Psychology and Play Therapy Australia (based in Hobart) to create an inclusive, accessible and welcoming concert experience for all, including neurodivergent audiences, children who have experienced trauma, and anyone with sensory processing, regulation difficulties, or other unique needs.
We’ve created a video you can watch with your child which introduces the environment of the TSO Studio, the conductor and what to expect at a Relaxed Concert.
The concert will include a performance of ‘Throw Your Tooth on the Roof’ – an interactive work written and arranged by Tasmanian songwriter Eleanor Tucker. You may like to watch and learn it with your child before attending the concert:
We understand that parents/caregivers can sometimes feel uncertain or anxious about bringing their child with unique needs to concerts. You don’t need to be. It’s the very reason we’ve created our Relaxed Concerts.
We have reduced the audience size to ensure a safe environment with plenty of space.
Children can bring items to support them such as their weighted blanket/toy, fidget toys or noise cancelling headphones. They can stand up, sit down, or move around. They can even take a break away from the music if they need to.
