OBSCURA III
Machina
Percussionist Claire Edwardes is a force to be reckoned with. She brings her astounding musicianship and untrammelled energy to an eclectic range of music including Rebonds, a solo percussion classic by 20th-century great Iannis Xenakis. All the other music on the program is by living composers, including Steeling Fire by Natalie Williams – which pays homage to women workers in the steel industry – and Fertility Rites by Christos Hatzis, which marries solo marimba with recorded throat singing by Inuit women from the Canadian arctic. Claire takes a rest and the TSO Strings come to the fore in Resting with Angels by Ella Macens (which is every bit as celestial as it sounds) and Entr’acte by Caroline Shaw. As always, Obscura is a feast for the eyes as well as the ears with lighting effects to enhance the music, and we’ll have a bespoke cocktail to tantalise your tastebuds.
