Strauss Horn Concerto

Two great mysteries have surrounded Mozart’s Requiem: who commissioned it and who completed it? Luckily, with modern-day sleuthing skills, we have convincing answers to both. The anonymous commissioner was Franz von Walsegg, a nobleman who insisted on secrecy so he might claim the music as his own. But Mozart died while composing it, leaving three final movements unwritten.

If you’ve seen the Oscar-winning film Amadeus, you may believe Antonio Salieri played a suspicious role in its completion. In fact, it was Mozart’s student Franz Xaver Süssmayr who brought this monumental work to a close.

Regardless of who finished the job, Mozart’s Requiem continues to hold audiences spellbound with its beauty and power. It stands alone on our concert program – a rare treat for any audience.
