Famous from St Petersburg to San Francisco, the Melbourne-born soprano was idolised in the theatre and mobbed on the street. A celebrity who enjoyed all the trappings of superstardom – seven kings and queens attended one of her gala performances; a dessert was created in her honour – Nellie Melba basked in the spotlight at Covent Garden, the Paris Opera, La Scala and…Hobart City Hall, Launceston’s Albert Hall and Zeehan’s Gaiety Theatre.
