Just as painters work with a varied palette, composers utilise a whole range of tone colours when writing for orchestra. Rimsky-Korsakov was one of the most brilliant orchestrators of all and in Scheherazade, a symphonic suite based upon tales from The Arabian Nights, he applies colour, light, shade, depth and texture with the proficiency of an Old Master. Peter Sculthorpe turned to the traditional music of Bali when seeking inspiration for Sun Music II. Like Scheherazade, Sun Music II inhabits a world of sight and sound, colour and imagination.

The exotic element is likewise prevalent in Bartók’s Violin Concerto No 2, a work which draws its inspiration from Eastern European folk music. One of the great violin concertos of the 20th century, Bartók’s Concerto No 2 is exuberant and introspective, multicoloured and mesmerizing. It finds its perfect exponent in soloist Alina Ibragimova.
