Completely out of the box: TSO Live Sessions

30 September 2024

On July 4, the TSO headed West with our brass and percussion sections performing our second Live Sessions concert for 2024, this time in Queenstown’s beautiful Paragon Theatre. It was a fitting date for the repertoire, which highlighted American greats from Gershwin and Copland, to Sousa and more.

Live Sessions MC and Curator, Jonathan Békés.

Principal Cello, Jonathan Békés, has well and truly cemented himself as the Live Sessions curator extraordinaire, continually pulling together interesting, entertaining, and completely out of the box programs. There were reimagined modern classics including Rosanna by Toto and Killing in the Name by Rage Against The Machine (for which our Principal Percussion, Gary Wain, wielded a megaphone!). This was rounded out by the cheeky The Lovers, composed by former Principal Tuba, Tim Jones.

Our musicians, Jono as MC and our support act, Stacey Loukis and Grant Woodward, all received rave reviews, not just for their musical talents but also for their obvious enjoyment while playing.

Special mention was made of our newly appointed Principal Tuba, Rachel Kelly, for her solo in Stars and Stripes Forever and the Tim Jones piece was a crowd favourite, described by one audience member as ‘moving and immersive’.

For another audience member, the concert brought back memories of playing the cornet in Queenstown brass bands.

The next day, our musicians and conductor Simon Reade put on a brass spectacular for students from across the West Coast region. It has been such a joy to reach students across Tasmania in 2024 and this packed-out performance was no different.

We are heading north for our next Live Sessions performance at the Westbury Town Hall on October 25. Tickets are available now.
