TAHNEE VAN HERK took up her position of Principal Bassoon with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2014. Her tertiary studies began at the Victorian College of the Arts and were continued in the Netherlands, where she completed postgraduate studies at Amsterdam’s Sweelinck Conservatorium. Her teachers included Joep Terway, Brian Pollard and Jos de Lange, former or current members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. She was Associate Principal Bassoon with Orchestra Victoria for 12 years and has been guest principal with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. A specialist in opera and ballet, Tahnee led the bassoon section in the 2013 Melbourne season of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen. She has a continuing interest in chamber music and has performed in a number of chamber ensembles in Melbourne. She teaches bassoon performance at the University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music and was previously a faculty member at the University of Melbourne. When she is not playing the bassoon, Tahnee loves to knit, especially woollen socks made from yarns sourced on local and international travels.
