For the last thirty years Stuart Maunder has been directing musical theatre and opera in Australia. He joined The Australian Opera as stage manager in 1978 and later became a resident director. He joined The Royal Opera as a staff director in 1990 and continued to direct in Australia, the UK, France and the USA. He returned to Australia in 1999 to become Artistic Administrator and later Executive Producer for Opera Australia. His productions for OA include The Tales of Hoffmann, Manon, The Gypsy Princess, Don Pasquale and Lindy. His music theatre productions include My Fair Lady and A Little Night Music for Opera Australia; Dusty, Shout!, Little Women, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd for Victorian Opera. A self-confessed Gilbert and Sullivan “tragic”, he has directed G&S productions in Australia, the UK and USA. His OA productions of Trial by Jury, HMS Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance have been televised nationally on ABC TV. He has appeared across Australia in his one-man G&S show, “Mad Songs of Englishmen”. He also appeared in the Sydney Symphony’s “Very Best of Gilbert and Sullivan” in 2011. He is General Director of New Zealand Opera, based in Auckland.
