About the Program
Marko Letonja brings verve and insight to this trio of great works. Haydn’s La Reine, a personal favourite of French queen Marie Antoinette, is the most celebrated of the composer’s Paris Symphonies while Richard Strauss’ tender and charming Oboe Concerto, played here by David Nuttall, is one of the triumphs of the revered composer’s amazingly productive late period. Stravinsky’s youthful Symphony No 1, on the other hand, is packed with all the energy and enthusiasm of an up-and-comer on the cusp of a magnificent career. Youth, beauty, wisdom and experience add up to a superb Saturday afternoon concert.
