About the Program
Orchestral classics by Mahler and Debussy are given chamber-sized makeovers in these stunning arrangements by Arnold Schoenberg and Erwin Stein. Mahler’s Symphony No 4 concludes with ‘Life in Heaven’, a charmingly naïve depiction of the celestial afterlife from the perspective of a child. Sung by celebrated mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell, it caps off Mahler’s most blissfully carefree symphony. The joys and sorrows of love are explored in Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer while Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune offers one of the most sinuous and sensuous works ever written.
