MJQ a program of jazz with Mia Palencia

11:00am Saturday 30 Nov 2013 | Home Hill Winery

The Jazz finale of Virtuosi’s 2013 season swings from iconic Tasmanian heritage houses to delightful contemporary buildings.

Virtuosi Tasmania usually plays concerts featuring masterpieces from the classical chamber music repertoire, but occasionally presents a jazz program. Jazz performances are always popular with our audience. Indeed jazz has been considered “chamber music of the 20th century”, performed by master musicians in intimate settings to discerning audiences. The Virtuosi Tasmania program will feature the music of an ensemble which exemplified this classical approach to jazz perhaps more than any other group – “The Modern Jazz Quartet”.

Formed in New York in the early 1950′s The MJQ, as it became known, was a spectacular success spanning more than three decades. Under the leadership of classically trained pianist and composer John Lewis, the MJQ presented concerts of elegance and refinement throughout the world without ever losing its ability to swing.

In this concert Steve Martin (double bass) leads three of Tasmania’s most accomplished musicians, Dan Sulzberger (piano), Kelly Ottaway (vibraphone) and Matt Ives (drums) playing music from the MJQ repertoire and will also feature the vocals of talented Tasmanian jazz songstress Mia Palencia.
