Play me a Picture Student Art Competition
About the competition
The TSO called for submissions of original student art work inspired by orchestral music. This competition was designed as an extra educational tool for preparing students attending the Play me a Picture concert.
We received 298 entries, and it was an absolute delight to look at all these works of art. The judges (Rachel Bremner, TSO violinist and artist and Kate Gray, TSO Education & Training Coordinaror) were looking for what gave the strongest impression of the music that was listened to whether it was a representation of the music, a depiction of how the music made the students feel or something that went on in their mind whilst listening to the music.

Training musicians for the future
Encouragement of young musical talent is an area where the TSO plays a national role. Through its Elite Artists Training Program, the TSO works with up-and-coming soloists, orchestral players, composers, conductors and administrators in a range of programs. We collaborate with Symphony Australia for its ABC Young Performers Awards and Conducting Courses and with the Australian Youth Orchestra for its Orchestral Fellowship, Music Presentation Fellowship, Arts Administration Fellowship programs and an annual combined orchestral performance. The TSO has a commitment to young solo musicians by offering recording and performance opportunities, and to composers through our Australian Composers’ School.

The Australian Composers' School
18-23 August 2008
The TSO Australian Composers’ School, under the direction of Dr Richard Mills AM, is a unique opportunity to experience an intense week of compositional training in one of Australia’s most beautiful cities. Successful applicants will travel to Tasmania to work closely with leading composers, hear their own music performed by a full symphony orchestra, learn more about the art of composition through rehearsals, workshops and lectures, and meet other composers.
In 2008, the TSO Australian Composers’ School tutors will include Gerard Brophy, Richard Mills, Andrew Schultz and Kenneth Young. The week will conclude with a presentation of work undertaken at the Composers’ School, which will be recorded with the assistance of ABC Classic FM.
The aim of the TSO Australian Composers’ School is to seek out and develop talented composers who want to hone their orchestral writing skills.
Applications must be received at the TSO no later than 5pm Monday 2 June 2008.
The TSO supports Symphony Australia’s Composer Development Program. Previous applicants to this program are encouraged to apply for the TSO Australian Composers’ School.
This exciting program is part of the TSO’s Elite Artists Training Program and is an integral part of the TSO’s Australian Music Program which is sponsored by Hydro Tasmania.
